CUDV

Centre for qualifying, work and social care (CUDV) was established in 1968 as an institute for education and training of persons with moderate, severe and profound mental retardation. Basic goal of CUDV at that time was to become a nationwide institution to cover all parts of Slovenia. The institute followed the guidelines of professional development, so they quickly started with the family education system, to broaden socialization of fellow citizens. First sheltered workshops were established in 1978, and in 1981 we (CUDV) opened the first residential community in the territory of the Republic of Slovenia.

We were also the first in Slovenia in the field of partnership of life and sexuality of people with intellectual disabilities, which enabled each partner his/hers way of life in adulthood. An individualized planning and team interdisciplinary approach to children, adolescents and adults with mental disabilities was developed intensively.

Our Centre is also one of the pioneers of services of information accessibility and “easy-to-read” development in Slovenia, too.

CUDV is also considered one of the first to begin with sports and recreational activities for people with intellectual disabilities in Slovenia. More than 15 years ago, we, as an institution, joint Special Olympics movement and all its programs, and present that to other similar institutions to establish Special Olympics Slovenia. We were also the first institution to join Abilympics movement, to enable persons working in sheltered workshops to participate in competitions regarding working skills and to gain self-esteem and social support.

CUDV residents are also active in the field of art, they perform at various events, play drama, perform puppet shows, and they are successful folklore dancers.

Some of our residents are involved in regular work processes in some local companies at daily basis.

In addition to other long-term objectives, the Center's leadership has set the goal of developing and adapting life in smaller dislocated units, which implies working towards the social inclusion of residents in the local environment.
